Welcome to our March Newsletter Designed for Home Educators and Teachers of Neurodivergent Learners.

Much of my career has been working with the wonderfully “neurodivergent’, seeing as I have first hand experience being dyslexic and ADHD myself! This newsletter is designed to celebrate the wonderful neurodiversity that makes up humanity, and provide some insight and inspiriration to those supporting.

This month we’ll be looking at the difference between neurodiversity and neurodivergence to gain some clarity around the terminology used. We’ll also be hearing from Rachel Barwell of Master dyslexia, about her incredible course for parents and teachers of dyslexic/ADHD children. As well as Rachel, we’ll be highlighting the wonderful, effervescent Kate Hey of Dare to be Dyslexic. We also highlight a resource designed by myself and an exciting upcoming event with Joe McQueen, an internationally renowned educator and author of “Calming Young Minds” who will be speaking about his work around restorative practice.

Understanding Neurodiverse and Neurodivergent Learners: A Guide for Educators

In recent years, the recognition and understanding of neurodiversity have become increasingly important in educational settings. Educators are encountering students with a wide range of neurological differences, leading to the need for a nuanced understanding of these variations and how to best support each learner. Two terms often used in this context are "neurodiverse" and "neurodivergent," but what exactly do they mean, and how do they apply to learners?

Neurodiversity vs. Neurodivergence: Explained

Neurodiversity refers to the natural variation in the human brain and nervous system. Just as biodiversity is essential for the health of an ecosystem, neurodiversity is crucial for the richness and adaptability of human society. It encompasses a broad spectrum of neurological differences, including but not limited to autism, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), dyslexia, dyspraxia, and Tourette syndrome.

Neurodivergence, on the other hand, specifically describes individuals whose neurological development and functioning differ from the societal norms or expectations. These differences can manifest in various ways, such as differences in communication, sensory processing, social interaction, and learning styles.

Understanding the Differences in Educational Settings

In educational settings, it's essential for educators to recognize and respect neurodiversity while understanding the specific needs of neurodivergent learners. Neurodiverse classrooms are composed of students with a wide range of cognitive abilities, learning styles, and strengths. Embracing neurodiversity means creating inclusive environments where all students feel valued and supported.

Neurodivergent learners may require additional accommodations or specialized support to thrive in academic settings. For example, a student with ADHD might benefit from preferential seating to minimize distractions, while a student with dyslexia may require assistive technology or alternative reading materials. Understanding the unique strengths and challenges of each neurodivergent student is essential for providing effective support and accommodations.

Recognizing the importance of specialized support for neurodivergent learners, educators can turn to resources like the Ark Education Directory. Unlocking the Potential: Dyslexia Education Support for Parents and Educators

In collaboration with Claire Ashmore of Growing Choices with Dyslexia, I am thrilled to announce our upcoming “Why Tyrannosaurus but not If?” online Dyslexia Education Support Course for Parents and Tutors, tailored to cater to the Pacific rim time zones in May. Our goal is to empower parents, grandparents, tutors, and educators with the knowledge and tools needed to support bright yet struggling learners effectively.

Through my extensive work with families, teachers, and learning support specialists, I've observed a growing demand for a deeper understanding of the root causes of learning difficulties. Parents and educators want actionable strategies to transform struggles into successful learning experiences. This is precisely what our course aims to deliver.

Titled "Why Tyrannosaurus but not If?", this course is designed by Richard Whitehead, a renowned UK neurodiversity author, linguist, and specialist educator. It delves into the beauty, strengths, talents, and challenges of dyslexic minds while offering practical solutions to address learning difficulties.

During the course, Claire and I will cover the following key areas:

Understanding Dyslexic Minds: Gain insights into how dyslexic minds work, including their strengths, talents, and challenges.
Root Causes of Learning Difficulties: Unpack the underlying reasons behind learning struggles and learn how to address them effectively.
Practical Tools and Strategies: Discover five hands-on tools and strategies for enhanced focus, self-regulation, and effective learning retention specifically tailored for neurodiverse brains.

Our course is not just about theory; it's about practical application. Participants will engage in interactive sessions and have the opportunity to practice the tools and strategies firsthand. This approach ensures deeper learning and equips you with actionable techniques to support your child or learners on their educational journey.
